What you'll achieve: Use optional AI on Setup, staff import, and the Today board summary
Feature flag
Your platform operator enables ai_import. This is separate from the Assistant (ai_assistant).
Day-to-day cover (absences, filling posts, explain the board) belongs in the Assistant button, not a separate page. The old Helpers page is retired: /ai redirects to Today.
Setup copilot
During Setup, import a staff list first, then last year's duty cover on Last week's rota. That can be one whole-school rota, or one file per person (select up to 40 at once, or one zip of those files). SchoolRota merges a personal pack into one school duty roster: areas, times, and who covers each post. Personal teaching files contribute duty cover only (playground, hall, gate, lunch, break). Ordinary lessons stay for the teaching timetable CSV.
You review and accept the draft. Nothing is saved until you apply, and nothing publishes until you complete setup and go live. The first 6 photos in a batch are read; convert extras to PDF or Word. Chat cannot ingest this pack. See Initial setup.
Staff import mapping
On Staff, spreadsheet import can suggest column mapping when ai_import is on. You still review the preview and confirm.
Explain board (Today)
On Today, open Board summary and select Explain board for a recap of gaps and engine notes. That works without an AI flag.
With ai_import and an API key, Polish with AI turns that recap into short prose. The board is never changed automatically.
